THE KHATOK MASKED DANCES & LITANG HORSE FESTIVAL

I have been exploring Tibetan regions since 1986 shortly after the Chinese allowed travel into Tibet. My latest adventure was to Kham in Eastern Tibet, an area that borders Sichuan Province. In a remote part of the Himalaya traditional Buddhist masked dances are still being held. The monastic center of Khatok is thriving, as Chinese oppression is less evident in this part of Tibet. The next part of the journey took me to the annual Litang Horse Festival. This week long celebration features traditional dancing and horse races and act of madness. Tibetans gather from the far corners of Kham to camp on the high altitude plain and catch up with friends and relatives. Om Mani Padme Hum!
